Introspecting About My Flawed (Career) Mindset

In this letter, I will discuss the flaws of my approach to my career and why it is equivalent to sending a personal invite to my anxiety. I have seen a few others going through a similar experience, and I hope this introspecting letter encourages them to view their functioning through a non-judgmental lens. My close friends/colleagues are aware of my anxiety. In the past, I had set unrealistically high standards for myself without any logical backing and based my self-worth on them. Unfortunately, this resulted in two types of side effects: on the good days, I was able to achieve these standards, and on other days, I was not. The former got me thrilled, which had prompted me to set a higher standard only for me to fail, and the latter manifested into devastated self-esteem. Don't get me wrong - these standards are the reasons for my willpower, perseverance and my success so far. I'm commenting not on the high standards themselves but their unrealistic nature. Let me give you a

Why I used WordPress to make my new website

I know nobody asked this, but it was very weird to make a website using wordpress.com (monilsoni.com) when a lot of developers are using cool JavaScript to make their website. So to be honest I tried hard last year to get momentum on starting a website - I even started writing business requirements for my website and following all the due processes but I just couldn't get started. I finally made a simple website using Bootstrap which went okay for a while. I wasn't happy with the content, but it was something and something is always better than nothing. But I always felt that I needed to make a better website and changing some little thing required me to open a text editor, edit an HTML line and then push the code. Ideally, there would be a separation between text content and the platform that is serving the content but we do not live in this ideal world. So I figured that I needed a better and easier way to manage a website and content. I talked to my friend Mit who is an expe

0 things to write about

So I've been very busy for the past few months, as you might have noticed by zero new posts. I know, I know, I failed to stick to my goal of 1 blog post per month but hey, I had other stuff to do. And I kept on procrastinating on writing every weekend. Now, when I finally set up a time to write, I do not know what to write about. I mean, I did not really have a vision in mind when I started writing this blog and unfortunately, I still do not. I have 5-6 articles half completed and now I don't remember what they were going to be. I should have completed them when I had the chance. But nevertheless, I decided that I am going to write at least 100 words today - even if I dump this article in the trash, I am still going to write 100 words. So, I put up a Pomodoro timer and started Googling about topics to write. Interestingly, all the sites that I came across had a title saying "# of topics to write about". And that number wasn't small - 81, 189, etc. But one of them

On Fitness, To My Past Self

Author's note: this is going to be a personal piece and a very crude one at that. Please do not expect grammatical polishing.   Hello Monil from 2018, I am Monil from 2021 January. How are you doing? Certainly not well. Anyway, I've set aside this time to write about fitness in general. I know what you've been through, so I can help you with it. But I am struggling to find a starting point. This usually happens when you want to address the mentality rather than a process or a life hack. Let me paint you a picture: you're well into your third semester, and it is Concours time. You see all the athletes on the field, and all you want to do for the three days is to be one of them - who wouldn't, right? They train hard, sometimes sacrifice lectures, and give in their 100% to the game. They bear through the opponent team's sledging - more so when not playing in home ground, and even though sometimes they don't win, they show up on the field for the next game. And

Taking a bite out of the Apple

Author's note: this piece isn't going to be a tech review. I'll be just talking about my experience. For those who know me, I have been an advocate of Android since I started using smartphones, and very naturally so, considering that the system provides multiple features including but not limited to extreme customization, an App Store with more than a million apps, a variety of flavors, and the amazing ecosystem of Google products integrated with a single Google account. However, at the onset of my fifth semester, I started looking for better practices for my life in general, and I stumbled upon the concept of de-Googlization and tried it out. De-Googlization essentially means that you try and separate Google from all factions of your life as much as possible. For instance: I switched to Firefox from Chrome started using DuckDuckGo for most searches disabled Google and Google Chrome apps on my phone to reduce the possibility that I look up something using Google, etc. I am

5:30 AM Thoughts

Author's note: This is really really unfurnished. Please read at your own risk :) I underwent a wisdom teeth removal surgery, and I say teeth because I got two removed. But anyway, that is a story for another time. Now, when I went to sleep, I still couldn't feel anything because of the local anesthesia. For some reason, I didn't feel sleepy, and I thought it would come to bite me back (it did). I woke up at 5 in the morning with a lot of pain (I didn't say agonizing because I experienced agonizing pain yesterday :p) I tried to sleep, but that didn't work out with my mind constantly attending to the pain. So, I decided to sit around for a while, texted a friend (and what a stroke of luck! She was awake), and laid back down. When that didn't work out, I woke my parents up, and asked for a medicine - we were also prepared with an injection since this was expected. Anyway, I took the pill, and now, all I had to do was wait for the medicine to take effect. I got my

Linux Mint Setup Guide

A Comprehensive Guide to Setup Linux Mint with the (subjectively) best softwares Note: If you have come across this document and want to add another useful application, please comment it below. Installation 1. Download the ISO file from https://linuxmint.com/download.php by checking which country is closest to you. Alternatively, if you are already on a linux system, you can go to the Software Sources section and click on the Main under the Mirror section. Let it be for a while and the mirrors will line up in a decreasing order of download speed. I would suggest downloading the file using an internet download manager since they are about 2 GB in size.  2. Disable fast startup in windows (read it in a tutorial somewhere that it is advisable to do this so as to not break anything. Do not know how true it is) 3. Follow the rest of this tutorial . It is about Linux Mint 18 but the steps for installation are the same anyway.  4. Once installed, go through the welcome dialogue box and do al
